The key to unlocking ScriptRunner for Jira migrations

The ScriptRunner Migration Suite is the key you need to unlock ScriptRunner for Jira migrations. Discover how these tools can speed up and simplify every step of the migration process.
Last year, Atlassian announced their end of life roadmap for Jira and Confluence on Data Center hosting. The first milestone in their plan is fast approaching: from March 2026, sales of these products and related marketplace apps will cease for new customers. Existing customers will then have until 2029 to migrate to their preferred tooling.
With an accelerated timeline being set, many DC users are now anticipating a move to Cloud in the very near future. To help make that move a little smoother, we’ve developed a suite of tools that simplify and speed up the ScriptRunner for Jira migration process, unblocking migrations to Cloud.
For consultants supporting their client’s migrations, or users making their own way to Cloud, the ScriptRunner Migration Suite can help alleviate some of the challenges and make that journey a little less daunting.

What is the ScriptRunner Migration Suite?

The ScriptRunner Migration Suite (SMS) is a new set of tools designed for consultants who manage migrations for their clients. This toolset helps at every stage of the migration process:
  • Analyse and assess existing scripts and configurations for Cloud readiness
  • Convert compatible DC scripts to Cloud versions with a custom-built ScriptRunner native agent
  • Deploy migrated scripts directly to Cloud instances
  • Get on-demand answers to many ScriptRunner and migration questions
These tools were first delivered to our TAG Channel Partners and our colleagues at Atlassian as part of an early access programme where feedback about the time savings was unanimous. We then rolled these tools out to a wider audience of Atlassian partners and ScriptRunner users so even more users can benefit from an easier migration to Cloud.

Analyse and Assess tool

The first step in a migration is to analyse the DC environment being migrated. Use the DC export found within the Script Registry feature in ScriptRunner for Jira DC to generate a ZIP file. Then, upload this file to the Analyse and Assess tool for a comprehensive view of your scripts and associated configurations, organised to enable meaningful conversations about your migration plan.
This tool does not use AI; it uses classic deterministic software. It has been designed to feed into AI agents, if and when you want them to.
For configurations without blockers, you’ll see Convert this configuration, which sends the context to the Migration Agent for assisted conversion.

Migration Agent

Unlike manual migration or generic tooling, the SMS Migration Agent is tailored specifically for converting ScriptRunner Data Center scripts to Cloud using ScriptRunner Intelligence. This custom-built AI agent uses current ScriptRunner API docs, performs recursive lookups, and validates generated code to help you create, convert, and optimise scripts. Whether you are working on a Cloud migration, building new Cloud implementations, or troubleshooting existing code, the Migration Agent can help.

Dev and Deployment tool

This tool pushes converted scripts to any Cloud environment and provides IDE support, making migration, testing, and deployment faster and repeatable. It also lets your teams collaborate directly from a Git repository, which can be used to store and deploy scripts.

One of the biggest benefits for us since utilising SMS during our migration, is the ability to be able to see the compatibility of all of our ScriptRunner customisation/automation scripts with Atlassian Cloud, see the largest problem candidates for the conversion process and really give us a feel for how much work could be automated using the tool. The other significant benefit is the AI capability to rewrite the scripts for cloud and creating thorough documentation along the way!

What’s next?

SMS is already helping consultants speed up and simplify their client’s ScriptRunner for Jira migrations. But this is just the beginning: our team will continue developing these tools to keep up with the challenges faced by users to help streamline their migration journey from beginning to end.
